Xbox One Modding - Can You Mod Your Xbox One?

Xbox One modding - an evolving scene at ConsoleModding.it

Xbox One modding: current state of the scene

Xbox One modding is one of the most searched topics among owners of Microsoft's console, but the technical reality is very different from the previous generation. On this page we honestly explain what can be done on the Xbox One today, what CANNOT be done, and what alternatives we at ConsoleModding.it offer.

Why modding the Xbox One is so difficult

Unlike the Xbox 360, where well-established services such as RGH, BIOS Flash and X360Key exist, the Xbox One uses a profoundly different security architecture:

  • Robust hypervisor: the Xbox One operating system runs games inside isolated virtual machines, making it extremely difficult to access the underlying system.
  • Continuous firmware updates: Microsoft releases frequent security patches that close every potential exploit identified by the scene.
  • Verified chain of trust: the bootloader, kernel and operating system are digitally signed and their integrity is checked at every boot.

What can be done on the Xbox One today

Although there is no complete modding service equivalent to the Xbox 360 RGH, there are some interesting official and unofficial features for tinkerers.

Xbox Dev Mode (official developer mode)

Microsoft lets you turn any Xbox One into a development console by signing up to its developer programme (a one-off fee of about $19). In Dev Mode you can:

  • Install and run emulators such as RetroArch to play SNES, Mega Drive, PS1, N64 and many other retro platform titles
  • Develop and test your own UWP (Universal Windows Platform) apps
  • Access some debug features and tools reserved for developers

This is in effect the safest and most legal "mod" possible on the Xbox One: it carries no risk of a ban and can be switched off at any time.

Native backward compatibility

Through Microsoft's official backward compatibility programme, the Xbox One can run a wide selection of original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles without any hardware or software modification. A perfect solution for anyone who wants to replay the great classics without resorting to a modded console.

What is NOT (yet) possible on the Xbox One

At present there are no stable, reliable solutions to:

  • Run Xbox One game backups from a USB or internal hard drive
  • Bypass firmware verification to play paid titles for free
  • Install custom firmware with full unlock features
  • Modify hardware components as was done with modchips on the Xbox 360

Theoretical exploits for very specific and now obsolete firmware versions are disclosed from time to time, but none of them has become a stable, repeatable service that can be offered commercially.
