- Damaged or dirty disc: scratches, fingerprints or dust on the disc itself prevent it from being read.
- Digital Edition: if yours is a PS5 Digital Edition, it has no disc drive — it can't read discs by design.
- Software or firmware: more rarely, an incomplete update or a corrupted database can cause reading problems.
What you can try yourself (before a repair)
A few quick checks can save you time:
- Check the disc: clean it with a soft cloth from the centre outwards and make sure it isn't scratched. Try another game to work out whether the problem is the disc or the console.
- Check the edition: make sure your PS5 is the version with a disc drive (Blu-ray) and not the Digital Edition.
- Restart the console: a full shutdown can fix temporary glitches.
- Safe Mode: start the PS5 in Safe Mode and try the Rebuild Database and Update System Software options.
If the problem remains after these checks — especially if there are mechanical noises or the disc isn't pulled in — the fault is almost certainly hardware and has to be fixed on the disc drive.

It's a delicate job: the PS5 drive is paired to the motherboard and, in many cases, the component also needs reprogramming to work properly.
