The PlayStation Portable (PSP) was Sony's first handheld console and one of the most loved by the modding community. Even today, in 2026, modding it with Custom Firmware (CFW) turns it into an outstanding retro-gaming device. In this guide I explain everything: how it works, which models are supported, what it lets you do and how to order the service.
What is the PSP mod (Custom Firmware)
The PSP mod installs Custom Firmware (CFW): a modified version of Sony's original firmware that unlocks all the hidden potential of the console. It lets you run unsigned code, load games from the memory stick, install emulators and customise every aspect of the system.
The three most popular CFWs are:
- PRO-C — long-standing and reliable, supported for years
- ME (Minimum Edition) — lightweight and fast, great for older models
- ARK-4 — the most modern, supports the PSP Go and recent firmware
Our service sets up the CFW best suited to your model and firmware.
What you can do with a modded PSP
🎮 ISO Loader — PSP game backups
Launch your PSP game backups straight from the memory stick in these formats:
- ISO (full UMD disc image)
- CSO (compressed version, takes up 30-40% less space)
Games load faster than from the original UMD drive and don't drain the battery.
🕶️ Retro-gaming emulators
A modded PSP supports emulators for almost every pre-PSP console:
- Nintendo: NES, SNES, Game Boy, GBA
- Sega: Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear
- NEC: PC Engine / TurboGrafx
- Atari: 2600, Lynx, Jaguar
- Arcade: NeoGeo, CPS1/CPS2, MAME
- Sony PS1: via POPS (built into the PSP)
- And many more
📱 Homebrew apps
- Alternative web browsers
- Media players (video, MP3, photos)
- E-book readers
- Text editors
- Free homebrew games
🔌 System plugins
CFW supports plugins (PRX) that add features to the system:
- CWCheat / NitePR — cheats and cheat codes
- RemoteJoyLite — stream gameplay to your PC
- PSPDisp — use the PSP as a second monitor
- USB Mass Storage — use the PSP as a flash drive without extra software
- FuSa-GUI — advanced save backup
🎨 Themes and customisation
Custom themes (CTF, PTF), animated wallpapers, custom system sounds, modified XMB menus.
Which PSP models the mod works on
Custom Firmware works on every PSP model ever released:
✅ PSP Fat (PSP-1000, 2004)
The original model, launched in 2004. TFT screen, UMD drive, Memory Stick PRO Duo. Full CFW support (PRO-C, ME, 6.61).
✅ PSP Slim (PSP-2000, 2007)
Lighter version with TV output. Full CFW support.
✅ PSP Brite (PSP-3000, 2008)
Improved (anti-glare) screen and built-in microphone. Some units have hardware limitations (TA-088v3), but we handle the installation with a dedicated CFW (PRO-C or 6.61 ME LCFW).
✅ PSP Go (PSP-N1000, 2009)
Compact model with no UMD drive, 16GB internal memory + M2 memory card. Supports dedicated ARK-4 and PRO-C. Games run only from internal memory or M2.
✅ PSP Street (PSP-E1000, 2011)
Budget version without WiFi. Supports CFW (although its user base is smaller).
Permanent CFW vs LCFW (Lite CFW)
Depending on the model and firmware, the installation can be one of two types:
Permanent CFW
It starts automatically every time you switch on the PSP. Typical of Fat models (1000) and early Slim models (2001-2003) with TA-082/085/086 motherboards. The PSP Go usually supports permanent CFW too.
LCFW (Lite Custom Firmware)
It has to be re-activated at every power-on via a small program on the memory stick. Typical of newer models (PSP-3000 TA-088v3, PSP-2004/3004) with updated hardware protections. It works perfectly; the only inconvenience is the manual loading at startup (a few seconds).
Don't worry: when you order, we automatically identify your model and install the most suitable CFW.
Want hassle-free permanent CFW on any model? On the PSP already modded with ARK-4 + Infinity Custom Firmware the mod is made permanent via Infinity on firmware 6.61, with ISO Loader and your choice of Memory Stick already set up: it arrives ready to use, with a 1-year warranty extendable to 2.

Standard USB mini-B, usually included with the original PSP. Needed to transfer ISOs and files between the PSP and your PC.
3. PC with management software
To manage your game library we recommend software such as Cleo PSP, iR Shell or simply Windows File Explorer / macOS Finder.
PSP Custom Firmware: is it legal?
Modding your own PSP for personal use is generally considered lawful. CFW is open-source software released by the modding community and does not infringe any Sony copyright. It becomes illegal if used to:
- ❌ Download copyrighted PSP games (piracy)
- ❌ Distribute copies of original games
Correct use: backups of your own original PSP games (ripping UMDs with the PSP itself) + retro-gaming emulators with legal ROMs.
Payment
The PSP mod at €29.99 is below the Klarna threshold (€35). If you add extra services (e.g. a memory stick, other consoles), you can pay in 3 interest-free instalments with Klarna. See all the details on the dedicated Klarna page.
PSP mod FAQ
Does the PSP mod delete saved games?
No, installing CFW doesn't delete anything. Your saves on the memory stick stay intact.
Can I play original UMD games after installing CFW?
Yes! CFW doesn't disable the UMD drive. You can play both your original UMDs and ISO backups as normal.
Does the mod work on the PSP Go without a UMD drive?
Yes, the PSP Go has 16GB of internal memory, expandable via Memory Stick Micro. The CFW is dedicated (ARK-4) and works perfectly.
How much battery does CFW use?
CFW doesn't significantly increase power consumption. In fact, loading games from the memory stick (instead of UMD) makes the battery last longer because the UMD motor isn't spinning.
Can I update the official firmware after installing CFW?
Not recommended: updating to Sony's official firmware removes the CFW. To stay up to date there are newer CFWs (e.g. 6.61 PRO-C or 6.61 ME) that include the latest features.
Does local multiplayer work with CFW?
Yes, local ad-hoc multiplayer (PSP-to-PSP) works normally with CFW. For online multiplayer there are fan-made servers such as Adhoc Party PC.
How long does the service take?
Shipping + work takes on average 3-5 working days in total. Faster than other consoles because the PSP needs no soldering.
Do I need to send the memory stick too?
Yes, send the PSP complete with memory stick and battery. If you don't have a memory stick (rare on the PSP Fat), we can include one in the service (extra charge).
